New detention centres

New detention centres Main Image

By Chris Whiting

24 March 2023

There will be two new therapeutic youth detention centres built in Queensland, one in Cairns and the other in southeast Queensland.  Note the word “therapeutic”:  these will not simply be jails, they will be secure centres where young offenders can access the assistance they need, and the programs they need to complete their sentence.

The State Government have already increased capacity in youth detention centres by 33%, increasing the number of beds from 230 in 2015, to 306 beds today.  More repeat serious offenders are being held in custody and held for longer.
