Making Rents Fairer: State Government Proposes More Law Changes

Making Rents Fairer: State Government Proposes More Law Changes Main Image

By Chris Whiting

14 July 2023

Chris Whiting MP has urged local residents to have their say on a new proposal to make rents fairer for Queenslanders.

Earlier this year, laws were passed to bring Queensland into line with New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT by limiting rent increases to once per year.

”Now we are getting reports that some landlords and agents are ending leases with tenants in order to increase rents more frequently than once per year,” said Chris Whiting MP.

“So we’ve released a discussion paper that proposes tying limits to rental increases to a property rather than individual tenancies.

“We want to make sure the intent of our laws is not circumvented.

“We want to see renters aren’t unfairly penalised by behaviour aimed at avoiding limits to rent increases.

“I encourage local renters to read the discussion paper and give some feedback,” said Chris Whiting MP.

Submissions close 5pm, 11 August 2023.
